Thank you Professor Schalk Grobbelaar for the following post:

The York Timbers Chair at the UP Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology proudly supported the SAICE Gauteng School Bridge Building Competition, recently hosted at the University of Johannesburg. This inspiring event brought together learners, educators, and industry to spark curiosity in engineering and construction, using wood as a medium for innovation.

Ferdinand Hassan (Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM)) delivered an engaging presentation on the benefits of timber construction, helping the next generation see wood not just as a material, but as a sustainable solution.

This was a true team effort:
RAW Modular manufactured prizes for the top three teams
Woodtechie crafted the trophies
Dowel & Co. (Pty) Ltd. supplied the timber used in the bridges

A representative from SAICE will share more about this exciting initiative at the Timber Construction Conference 2025. It’s the perfect opportunity for anyone passionate about timber, education, or engineering outreach to get involved.

Let timber lead. Let it transform. Let it form the future.
